You're probably aware that you can get portable DVD players that strap to the back of a seat. No doubt they're vastly cheaper, plus you can take them anywhere. Probably it is harder to get them to play through the car's sound system. Might work well for one viewer but maybe a bit awkward for two or more (?).

We walk you through the installation of an overhead DVD player in a 2011 Honda Pilot. We take you through. In this video we show you the process of installing an overhead flip down monitor with built in dvd player into a 2011 Honda Pilot. Rosen AV7900 DVD Headrest monitors – Video walk through.

I don't own one but my brother in-law, who has one daughter, does. I do have a roof-mounted one in our new Sienna. Runs through audio system or through wireless headphones. My only issue is it is hard to cue it up without seeing the screen (e.g., from the front seat). Yes it has a remote but without seeing where you are in the previews or what selection is highlighted it is a bit hard. My solution is to only cue it up during stops.

When the kids are older they can cue it up themselves. Etap Electrical Power System Software Free Download. That'll be a few years. We use a cheap portable system ourselves. When we bought our minivan (circa 1999-2000), built-in DVD systems were rare, IIRC. We have 3 young kids (born in '99, '01, '05) and take semi-regular trips from Chicago to St. We soon saw the advantages of having a DVD system, but when we checked into adding an installed one after-market, the priced seemed very high.

We bought a cheap system (they're cheaper now), with one unit that is a player/display combo, and another that is display only that connects to the first (so you play one DVD and two kids can watch on monitors). It's kinda a mess when set up in the car, with straps and cables all around. So we hook it up for trips only (not for everyday). We're happy with it - having a DVD player installed and having the kids ask to watch it for trips to the grocery store might be overkill.

That said, when we replace this vehicle, we'll probably go for a pre-installed system. But I think the portable systems are reasonable stand-ins for an installed system. We've got a portable, BTW. I want one installed.

I also want a bigger screen than the portable one. I suppose I could velcro my laptop to the ceiling upside down, if only I couldl figure out how to get the movie to show upside down.

Seriously, no one has ever had one installed? Maybe I'll try calling around to see about what it would cost. I'm really just trying to gauge how much more a car WITH one is worth to me compared to one without one. Edit: I found a place that does it for $800, in case anyone else is interested. That's a whole lot cheaper than buying one with it already in place. My son has a portable DVD player for his 5 year old daughter when they travel. The girl likes it.

My only concern with that is the 'flying missile' if there would be a collision. Cost about $100 at Wal-Mart if I remember correctly. It is a bit of a hassle with all the wires to hook up after the girl is in the car seat - and then disconnect again later. My daughter has a 2008 Honda Pilot with a factory built in roof drop down display DVD. Her kids like it. Cost something over $1000 if I remember correctly. Came with 2 sets of wireless headphones and controls that can operate the DVD separately from the front passengers audio system.

Was very convenient. I'll second the ipod Touch. We used to bring a laptop on long trips but now my daughter uses an ipod Touch.
